Search engine optimization definition

SEO is the abbreviation for search engine optimization. It refers to search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

Web pages consist of articles, images, videos, local listing, etc. And all that we browse on a daily basis.

Preferably in digital marketing, is defined as a practice of increasing, quality of traffic to your website through organic or paid search engine results.

Breaking it down into smaller bit size information.

SE (search engine) of SEO is briefly explained below.

Here is how search engine optimization works: Google or any search engine has a crawler that goes out and gathers information about all the content that they find on the internet.

The crawlers then bring all those 1s and 0s back to the search engine to build an index.

The O meaning of SEO is optimization

This is where the people who write content and put it on their sites.

Fashioning those content will enable the search engines to understand, what they're seeing and the readers who arrive, via search will like what the see.

As content is key, search engine optimization is the backbone of any website.

Well, now that you have a fundamental understanding of search engine optimization. Let's dive deeper into the components of Search engine optimization.

Types of search engine optimization

As a beginner, this might be new to you. But for those who are experienced, then be sure to tag along.

The are three types of SEO:

  • White hat
  • Black hat
  • Grey hat

Search Engine Optimization for Beginners

White hat - are techniques that strictly adhere to search engine guidelines. By choosing white hat SEO, you are staying within the rules and therefore, the safety and integrity of your website are more likely to be out of risk or being banned from search engines.

A few examples of white head SEO are:

  • Quality content and services
  • Fast site loading and mobile friendliness
  • Rich keyword meta tags
  • Making your site easy to navigate

Black hat - are techniques opposite to white hat. These are shortcuts that are used to increase traffic or rank your site quicker than using white hat techniques. Like always, most shortcuts don't lead to the right destination. You are breaking the guidelines of search engine terms of service. And as a consequence, your website is at high risk of being banned or permanently removed from all search engines.

Examples of Black hat SEO:

  • Duplicate content or mirror site
  • Unrelated keywords
  • Keywords stacking and keyword stuffing
  • Social networking spam

Grey hat - techniques are risky as black hat SEO. It is that point between white hat and black hat SEO. Again you would want to be cautious of the steps you take, as here you also violating the rules.

Examples of grey hat SEO:

  • Redesigning your site at regular intervals
  • Fabricated news
  • Pay for reviews
  • Free stuff

Your overall attention should be on white hat SEO. As previously, black hat was the way to easily rank to the top. Not the case anymore!

Unfortunately, the search engine algorithms have changed over the course of time. As a result, black and grey hat SEO can't see themselves in existence.

The ultimate goal as a beginner is you should stay on the safe side, and slowly work your way where you need to.

Shortcuts will only lead to short term success as opposed to taking the longer route.

Search engine optimization techniques

SEO is a fast-paced and dynamic field, especially with its complexity in 2019 and years ahead. It is becoming more than just building links and creating content or gussying old content.

Here is a short list of techniques you can follow to stay within the guidelines and build a healthy website.

  • Improve titles and descriptions to boost CTR
  • Update underperforming pages with internal links
  • Write genuine content
  • Link related topic
  • Link to sites with a good reputation

Differentiating between On page and Off page SEO

SEO is divided into 2 categories. On page and Off page SEO both speak for themselves. Allow me to emphasize more about it.

Your on page SEO basically covers all the essentials, you need to include in your article and meta description.

Whereas off page SEO had to do with building backlinks, guest posting, etc. That is everything outside of on-page SEO.

Just writing content shouldn't be your goal. Creating a structure and layout is what you will need to do to better optimize your work.

Your on page SEO should include the following. And this goes for every individual page on your website for both Blogger and WordPress.

Your on page SEO must include:
  • Keyword research ( Keyword Tools)
  • A short and attractive title
  • Inviting introduction
  • Keyword in the meta description
  • Headings ( H1 and H 2)
  • Media( videos, images, infographic, graphs, etc)
  • Keyword density
  • Previous related post and outbound post ( internal and external links)
  • 1500-3000 words
Upon applying these search engine optimization tips, you will surely see growth in traffic. Make sure to keep practicing and including these tips in your every post.

According to MOZ.com, off page SEO (also called off-site SEO) refers to actions taken outside of your own website to impact your rankings within the search engine results page (SERPs).

Furthermore, off page SEO matters because of its major role in ranking your web page. Choosing high-quality backlinks can boost your DA and PA from the smallest to highest rank.

Type of off page SEO links

  • Natural links - are editorially given without any action on the part of a page owner. For example, a food blogger adding a link to a post that points toward their favorite produce farms is a natural link.
  • Manually built links - are acquired through deliberate link-building activities. This includes things like getting customers to link to your website or asking influencers to share your content.
  • Self-created links - are created by practices such as adding a backlink in an online directory, forum, blog comment signature, or a press release with optimized anchor text. Some self-created link building tactics tend toward black hat Seo and are frowned upon by search engines, so tread lightly here.

Do-follow vs No-follow backlinks

Do-follow - a do follow link is that link which will pass on the search engine optimization benefits to your website where it is built from the hyperlink.

You can say, these are links that will really fuel your DA and PA, thereby increasing traffic to your web page or site.

When building do follow links, remember to choose reputable sources that allow you to do so.

Where you can build do follow backlinks? Here are 2 lists of do follow links forums (list 1 and list 2) to increase backlinks in 2019.

Be sure to check the 'list' out and start building your do follow links.

No-follow - are links that are opposite to do follow links. More specifically, they are hyperlinks with rel="no follow" tag.

These links do not influence the search engine ranking of the destination URL, because  Google does not transfer PR or anchor text across them. In fact, Google doesn't even crawl no follow links.

Here are 2 examples of Do-follow and No-follow links:

Do follow
<a href="https://ahrefs.com">blue text</a>

No-follow
<a href="https://ahrefs.com" rel="nofollow">blue text</a>
